Carbon fiber and Kevlar are both high-performance composite materials used in motorsport and automotive upgrades. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right material for each specific application on your car.
What Is Kevlar?
Kevlar is an aramid fiber developed by DuPont. It is best known for its use in body armor and bulletproof vests — and that reputation is earned. Kevlar is extraordinarily resistant to impact and puncture. Per unit of weight, Kevlar is stronger in tension than steel. However, Kevlar has specific weaknesses that make it less ideal than carbon fiber for most automotive aerodynamic applications.
Carbon Fiber vs Kevlar: The Key Differences
Stiffness
Carbon fiber wins decisively on stiffness. When you want an aerodynamic part — a hood, splitter, or diffuser — to hold its shape under airflow and not flex, stiffness is exactly what you need. Kevlar is more elastic and will deflect under aerodynamic loads, reducing effectiveness.
Impact Resistance
Kevlar wins on impact and puncture resistance. A Kevlar panel will absorb far more energy before cracking or fragmenting than carbon fiber. This is why racing seat tubs, fuel cells, and door intrusion panels sometimes use Kevlar or carbon-Kevlar hybrid layups — the Kevlar absorbs crash energy while carbon provides structure.
Weight
Carbon fiber is lighter for equivalent stiffness. Kevlar is heavier but tougher. For exterior automotive parts where rigidity and weight reduction matter most, carbon fiber is superior.
UV Resistance
Neither material handles UV particularly well without protection. Both require clear coat or UV-stabilized resin to maintain appearance and structural integrity over time.
Carbon-Kevlar Hybrid Parts
Some manufacturers offer hybrid layups combining carbon fiber outer faces with a Kevlar inner layer. This construction provides the stiffness and appearance of carbon with improved toughness. These are common in racing floor panels and splitters subject to ground strikes. For most street and occasional track use, pure carbon fiber parts are the better choice.
The Verdict for Automotive Parts
For aerodynamic body parts — hoods, roofs, mirrors, splitters, diffusers — choose carbon fiber. The stiffness advantage is essential, the weight savings are greater, and the visual appearance is the premium look buyers expect. Kevlar and hybrid materials are the right choice when impact resistance is the primary concern: race car safety structures, skid plates, and underbody protection.
