Monthly Tasks
Wash with pH-Neutral Soap
Every wash, use a pH-neutral car wash shampoo and a soft microfiber wash mitt. Avoid automatic car washes with abrasive brushes — they scratch clear coat and accelerate UV damage on carbon fiber. Two-bucket method: one bucket for rinse, one for soapy wash water. Rinse thoroughly after washing to remove all soap residue.
Inspect for Chips and Cracks
During each wash, run your hand over carbon fiber surfaces and visually inspect edges for chips, cracks, or delamination. Carbon fiber can develop micro-cracks at edges that allow moisture penetration if left unaddressed. Catch these early and seal with touch-up clear or have them professionally repaired.
Quarterly Tasks
Apply UV-Blocking Wax or Sealant
Every 3 months, apply a quality carnauba wax or synthetic sealant with UV inhibitors to all clear-coated carbon fiber panels. UV degradation is the primary enemy of carbon fiber clear coats — consistent wax protection dramatically extends the time before yellowing begins. Apply in shade, allow to haze, buff to a high gloss.
Check Mounting Hardware
Every 3 months, inspect mounting bolts, rivnuts, and clips on all carbon fiber parts. Track use causes vibration that can loosen hardware. Check hood latch striker alignment, diffuser mounting points, splitter hardware, and mirror cap tabs. Tighten or replace as needed. Loose carbon parts can shift under aerodynamic loads.
Bi-Annual Tasks
Decontaminate and Clay Bar
Twice per year, use an iron decontamination spray and a clay bar on all painted and clear-coated surfaces including carbon fiber panels. Industrial fallout, brake dust, and iron particles bond to clear coat and accelerate micro-scratching and corrosion at the surface. Clay bar removes these contaminants before they cause permanent damage.
Ceramic Coating Inspection
If your carbon fiber parts are ceramic coated, inspect the coating condition bi-annually. Ceramic coatings last 2-5 years depending on product quality and care — hardness, beading behavior, and gloss will indicate coating health. Schedule recoating before the coating fully degrades to maintain continuous UV and chemical protection.
Annual Tasks
Full Paint Correction if Needed
Annually, assess whether any carbon fiber panels have developed swirl marks, light scratches, or oxidation in the clear coat. If so, a machine polish with a dual-action polisher and appropriate compound or finishing polish will restore optical clarity. Follow with fresh wax or sealant after any polishing step.
Inspect for UV Yellowing
Clear coats over carbon fiber yellow before the carbon itself is damaged — the resin in the fiber degrades more slowly than the surface clear coat. Annually inspect for any amber tint developing in the clear. Early-stage yellowing can be treated with a UV-cutting polish. Severe yellowing requires professional recoating or replacement.
Underbody Carbon Inspection
For cars with carbon fiber diffusers or undertray components, an annual underside inspection is essential — especially after track use. Check for impact damage, cracking, stone chips, and moisture ingress at cut edges. Seal exposed carbon fiber edges with clear coat or epoxy if you find any bare fiber. Moisture inside delaminated carbon fiber ruins parts over time.
Track Day Checklist
Before and after every track day: inspect all mounting hardware for tightness, check for cracks or chips from stone strikes, verify hood latch engagement, and clean brake dust from all carbon surfaces within 24 hours. Brake dust is chemically aggressive and etches clear coat quickly at the high concentrations generated on track. A thorough wash after every track session is the single highest-value maintenance step for preserving your carbon fiber investment.
